Upper Middle Coast Records

Software: Illustrator, Photoshop

Upper Middle Coast Records is an independent label formed in 2020 with three artists that release music under the label: the Howlies, Rex Jurilla, and dreamboat. The name is an allusion
to Lake Superior as the founder lived in Duluth, MN before moving to St Paul.

The label requested a scalable logo that could be used across all promotional materials and be stamped on artist releases and other merchandise. My goal for the logo was to create something that felt hand-made and purposeful. The tall, narrow border brings order to the typefaces that have a hand drawn quality. The logo can be used in any color to fit the palette of album covers and posters.

Ideation

Initially, I wanted the shape of either Minnesota or Lake Superior to be a prominent part of the logo. After some sketches, I took this intersecting angles idea from some of the Minnesota designs and decided to put it in a badge instead. For those in the know, it is still a reference to Minnesota.
